Total Knee Replacement Surgery from
Top Los Angeles Knee Specialists

As we age, many things can contribute to the deterioration of our joints. Old sports injuries, repetitive motion, osteoarthritis and the overall aging process can cause the knee to sustain injuries that can no longer be treated successfully with nonsurgical options. Chronic, severe pain can make it difficult or even impossible to perform everyday tasks such as walking or climbing stairs.

If non-surgical treatment options no longer provide relief for your chronic knee pain, a total knee replacement may be the best option for you. Knee replacement surgery will allow you to get back to your life while relieving pain and correcting joint degeneration, enabling you to return to your everyday activities. Our Board-certified knee doctors and staff will ensure you receive the best results in total knee replacement Los Angeles has to offer.

Causes leading to Total Knee Replacement

Chronic knee pain is commonly caused by arthritis. Arthritis is term used to describe pain and inflammation in the joints. While there are many types of arthritis, most knee pain leading to pain and loss of mobility is caused by one of three types of arthritis.

  • Osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is an age-related form of arthritis that causes joint pain and stiffness. As we age, the cartilage that cushions our joints begins to wear away, eventually leading to painful bone-on-bone contact. This type of arthritis is more common in people over 50 years of age, although it has been seen in younger patients.
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). RA is a disease that causes the synovial membrane around the knee to become inflamed and thickened. This autoimmune disorder can damage the cartilage over time, causing cartilage loss and joint pain and stiffness.
  • Post-traumatic Arthritis. This type of arthritis forms as a result of a major injury to the knee. Bone fractures, ligament tears, and resulting damage to the cartilage over time will result in arthritis of the knee joint.

The Nanoknee Bone-Resurfacing Knee Replacement

At Nanoknee, we have revolutionized partial and complete knee replacement in Los Angeles, Bakersfield and San Luis Obispo. Our surgical technique involves the use of advanced digital technology, with a 3D model of the patient’s knee joint used in creating a surgical plan, selecting and customizing the implant, and custom incision placement to create optimal fit and smooth, natural motion. Recovery time is brief, and patients are able to stand upon the new knee within minutes after surgery. The Nanoknee process does not require a long recovery, with no need for extensive physical therapy as was necessary with traditional knee replacement surgery.

Knee Surgery Los Angeles

Traditional Total Knee Replacement Surgery

Traditional total knee replacement surgery, also known as arthroplasty, involves resurfacing the bones of the knee joint and installing a new joint to provide pain-free movement. There are four basic steps involved in traditional total knee replacement surgery:

  • Preparing the bone. The damaged surfaces of the tibia and femur will be removed and resurfaced, preparing the surface for the new joint to be installed.
  • Positioning of the new knee joint. The removed bone and cartilage will be replaced by a manufactured knee joint and secured in place.
  • Resurfacing the kneecap. The underside of the kneecap will be resurfaced if possible and fitted with a plastic button to hold it in place.
  • Inserting a spacer for cushion. New cushioning surfaces which serve the same purpose as the original cartilage in the knee will be placed between the surfaces of the new knee joint to provide cushion and absorb impact.

Recovery from Traditional Total Knee Replacement Surgery

Traditional total knee replacement surgery requires several weeks of rehabilitation and rest in order for you to be able to resume your daily activities. Your surgeon will give you a plan to help you manage pain and swelling following total knee replacement surgery which includes prescription pain medication, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (or NSAIDs), ice, and rest.

Exercise is a crucial component to ensuring your ability to return to your daily activities. This is especially important in the weeks immediately following your knee replacement surgery. You should be able to resume most day-to-day activities within 3 to 6 weeks following your surgery. Some pain and discomfort are common during the initial phases of your treatment and is more commonly experienced later in the day or evening.

Your comprehensive exercise plan will include:

  • A graduated plan to increase the amount of time you spend walking each day. It is imperative that you resume walking immediately to ensure the new joint functions properly.
  • Normal everyday activities such as standing, sitting, and climbing stairs.
  • Specific exercises outlined by your surgeon designed to allow you to regain your strength and range of motion.

With traditional knee replacement surgery, most patients are able to resume driving within 4-6 weeks of surgery. This is largely dependent upon the return of your reflexes which will enable braking and driving motions, as well as your ability to sit in a car seat for extended periods of time.
