After earning his MD at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), Dr. Ferro continued on to fulfill his internship there as well. The university also awarded him a research fellowship in orthopedic surgery. He completed his residency at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque.

Dr. Ferro earned an additional fellowship in joint replacement and adult reconstructive surgery at the prestigious Anderson Orthopaedic Research Institute in Arlington, Virginia. There, he trained with Dr. Charles Engh, a world-renowned authority on joint replacement and pioneer of innovations in joint replacement surgery. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and a diplomat of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Dr. Ferro has traveled extensively abroad for training on the latest joint surgery advancements. He is an expert in Birmingham Hip Resurfacing, surgical navigation, ceramic joint surfaces and other state-of-the-art techniques. These approaches fulfill his goal of helping patients complete the treatment process faster – so they can heal and return to full function more quickly than ever before. 

Not only does Dr. Ferro possess a treatment approach that yields better outcomes for patients, he’s also known for his caring approach to medicine. He believes in educating patients to prepare them for treatment, so he begins each consultation with a discussion about the patient’s condition and the various treatment options available. He then guides them in selecting the best choice for their lifestyle. Should surgery be required, Dr. Ferro can employ the best treatments and latest technologies available to ensure a successful outcome.

An Ongoing Commitment to Research

A board-certified surgeon with licensure in California, Dr. Ferro has contributed many published research studies on bone and joint issues. His special interests in total joint arthroplasty include minimally-invasive surgical techniques, partial knee replacements, hip resurfacing, computer assisted surgery, and bearing surface wear reduction.

To obtain this certification, Dr. Ferro earned a four-year undergraduate degree, a four-year medical degree, and a residency learning the specialty of orthopedic surgery. From there, he pursued a rigorous fellowship – gaining additional clinical experience in joint replacement and adult reconstructive surgery.

He then applied for board certification, which is an optional step that not all physicians take. It involves passing a grueling examination to demonstrate his expertise, and he must take exams every several years to maintain his certification. He is dedicated to his specialty, committed to life-long learning, and held to the highest codes of ethics and performance.
