The Nanoknee™ Difference A Next-level Approach – For Active Patients Who Want the Best

Our hybrid resurfacing technique is a game-changer for patients who have arthritis on the whole knee joint. It allows us to remove the damaged areas from all three compartments with less bone resection and minimal disruption to the capsule and ligaments.

By treating the entire knee, we can prevent a failure in the future, while still delivering the benefits we’re known for, including:

  • Getting patients on their feet within 30 minutes of surgery
  • Returning most patients home to begin the healing process within two hours
  • Reducing recovery time, sparing healthy muscles, and minimizing opioid use

Understanding Your Knee’s Anatomy

Your knee is composed of the femur, tibia, and patella – otherwise known as the thigh bone, shinbone, and kneecap, respectively. The meniscus is the soft cartilage between the femur and tibia. It acts as a cushion that absorbs shock during motion. Arthritis, injury, and other diseases can damage that protective cushion, causing severe pain and difficulty performing daily activities.

Damage to the knee can occur in the following three compartments:

  • Patellofemoral: behind the kneecap
  • Medial compartment: on the inside of the knee
  • Lateral compartment: outside of knee joint

Tricompartmental Knee Resurfacing

In the past, a total knee replacement was the only treatment option if osteoarthritis progressed to more than one compartment of the knee.

Now, orthopedic surgeons can remove up to three components of the knee joint and replace them with partial implants – all while preserving your natural ligaments. The advantages of this approach include:

  • Less damage to healthy ligaments
  • A higher chance that your knee will function and feel like your natural joint
  • Improved range of motion
  • Smaller scar and quicker recovery
  • Less post-op pain

What to Expect During Surgery

Tricompartmental knee resurfacing provides the most minimally-invasive total knee replacement available. It’s an advanced technique that demands a high level of technical skill, and Dr. Ferro is one of the only surgeons in the entire country capable of performing the procedure.

What makes this approach so unique is that it spares the two stabilizing ligaments of the knee: the anterior cruciate ligament and the posterior cruciate ligament. These important structures give the knee its natural feel and balance when moving. They are normally removed during a traditional total knee replacement, causing patients to lose their natural range of motion. In addition, Dr. Ferro resurfaces the damaged compartments of the knee, rather than making the large bone cuts that are necessary during a traditional replacement surgery.

Recovery and Results

Your recovery and rehabilitation process will begin immediately after surgery. A physical therapist will visit to guide you through exercises to strengthen your leg and restore knee movement, as well as provide you with an at-home exercise program to build your thigh and calf muscles. Knee immobilizers will be used to stabilize the joint, and you will need to walk with crutches or a walker.

The results of the procedure are dramatic and amazing. Our patients experience a range of motion and stability unmatched by traditional total knee replacement. They are recovering faster and immediately gaining confidence in their knee after the procedure.
